DESCRIPTION

Brandaan is a educational method developed by publisher house Malmberg (NL) for primary school to learn more about history.

I was asked to illustrate for a few chapters / editions some pretty heavy but interesting subjects like slavery and the second world war.

Painting a scene

I always find it very important that my illustrations really suck you into a world and time, so I spend quite some time on visual research to make sure I got the details right.

Slavetrade - sketch

This Dutch fort is still standing in the present day - the idea was here to have the present day photo being overlapped by a historic scene.
